RAW and Lightroom 3….What Was I Thinking?

I must be crazy. I have a ton of homework, tons of stuff to do….but what do I do? I decide I’m going to shoot in RAW and download LR3. Bahahaha! I have absolutely no idea what I’m doing (whats new though right?) and I don’t care.

This is my first attempt in LR3. From what I’ve heard, LR is supposed to be quick and easy. I’m on the learning curve rollercoaster right now, because it was not. What it WAS, was FUN!

Roman has had a little cut on his thumb for about a week now. At first we couldn’t get him to wear a band-aid for anything. Luckily Sal had cut himself around the same time and was wearing one too. But now….now, we can’t get him to NOT wear it. He saw these nifty Cars band-aids about a week ago, and they are almost gone. I should invest in Band-Aid. By the way…he calls his owies “hurts”. “Mom can I have a cars for my hurt?”. I now officially speak 2 languages :).

Some photo’s from my walk outside today.

If anyone can point me to some good tutorials for LR I would appreciate it much! And….I still havent downloaded the photo’s off of Romans little camera. Some day…. Lol!  Oh yeah, what kind of computer do you guys use for editing. I think my handy old laptop is on its last leg :(. I don’t think that it was built for all the photo’s I’ve put on it.

I think lynda.com has some tutorials but, I’d recommend going to the library and reading the first chapters of ‘Lightroom 3: Streamlining your digital photography’ by Nat Coalson. I picked up lightroom 3 a few months ago and, I played with it a little. All I used then was curves and the obvious stuff that I already knew. Nat Coalson’s book will teach you the most important thing, getting a workflow. So, you import your photos, and then what do you do with them? You need to work out a sensible directory structure, means of tagging them etc… His book really breaks it down well. If you organise that, then you’ve cracked the most important part. After that, you can create export filters to export for, wordpress, flickr etc… Finally, you will start to play with the sliders (yes… finally, not initially :p) and learn what they will do to your photo.

    Good luck 🙂

I didnt even think of the library! That’s a realy good idea! I think I lean towards tutorials because they are usually quick, especialy since Im going to school full time and have two of their books to read (or skim through for the answers), but I dont ever find it to be in depth enough. Thank you! Looks like Im getting a library card!

I recommend Scott Kelby’s book on Lightroom 3 – I think it’s called “The Lightroom 3 Book For Digital Photographers” (very easy to remember!). I haven’t gotten it yet, but I did get his book for Elements 9. VERY user friendly and an easy read. You can usually find it for a good discount at Barnes & Noble online. Good luck! I just got my LR3 Wednesday and haven’t yet installed it.

    Great photos. 🙂

I want to start shooting in RAW format, but don’t know what to do with it once I do, so I’ve been putting it off. I don’t know anything about LR. I’m using Photoshop CS3. I currently have everything on my old PC, an extra (old) hard drive, and an external hard drive. It’s a wonder I can find anything. lol!

That’s kind of where I am right now. Lukily Jake said he would explain to me what the hell Im doing…cuz Im lost. I did notice I have a lot more control, as well as a lot less space. 🙂 I was using Elements 5 for a while, but it was eating up so much of my time. No bueno with little one.
