Girl’s Just Wanna Have Fun!!!!

The lovely Jolene and I ^^^^^^^^^^ got dressed up, did our hair and makeup, and hit up the sleaziest laundromat in town.  Woooo Hooo!!! This is my first experience with Photoshop, and the amazing Jake helped me out with the processing. I think it looks pretty cool!!!  This is the first time I have played with Photoshop, I had no idea how to even open an image before Jake showed me. LIFE SAVER!!!!

Busy Busy Bee

My weekend was super busy but super great! We started off with a yard sale, not so much fun, but luckily Sal took the lead on it. We had two bikes for sale. Roman and Tio Mark are next to them.

The cool thing about these two bikes is that they are mine and Sal’s first bikes. They didn’t sell but I’m kinda glad in a weird way.

The yard sale was Friday. Afterwards we ran errands and hung out at the house.

Saturday we went fishing. Unfortunately I didn’t bring my camera. I’m glad I didn’t though. While it was Roman’s first fishing trip I was glad that I was there in person. Not behind the lens. I did however grab some cute pictures with Sal’s iPhone :).

Ahhh….and Sunday! I got to take pictures of the an adorable little boy. Thank you Brittany for letting me practice and hang out! 🙂

Your Best Advice

I figure the hardest thing about being a photographer would be the originality part. Well for me anyways.  I think it stems back to the time when I was told as a child to color inside the lines! Damn teachers! Lol!

I went with Jake this morning to my grandma’s house. She’s got some really rustic stuff out there and I showed him around. With my Grandma’s approval of course. Afterwards he showed me a little around CS5. I’m movin on up! Ya, tried to put a texture on the next pic. No go. Have no idea what I’m doing! Ahhhh….what’s new though?

What a wonderful day of learning what I’m interested in! Yay for fun learning! We talked about the business of going into business for yourself. I’m have a degree in Business, but it has to be so scary to take that plunge! I’m good taking pics of my kiddo’s and friends just for fun. I would LOVE to try my hand at newborn photography though! Just for fun of course. I could never charge anyone for what I’m doing :)!

Later in the day we went over to Honey (my mom) and Grandpa’s house. Last weekend my mom was watering the plants in their courtyard when a bird flew out of one and nearly scared her half to death. I took half of the batch a couple of days ago and picked up the rest today since she never came back. I’m pretty sure they are quail eggs (thanks boss), but not sure they will ever hatch. Poor guys!

I’m really working hard to try to improve but there are so many ways, I’m not sure where to start. Still constantly thinking of composition and light. I had to restrain myself until the end of the day to take photo’s hehe.

I asked Jake today what was the best advice about photography he had ever been given was. Now I want to hear from you. Tell me what turned that lightbulb on for you!

Milestones

How freaking awesome is the processing on this picture? I love it! Thanks to presets :)!  What a beautiful day in sunny Southern California! I’m not even sure how hot it was! It was definitely hot enough to go swimming in the blow up dragon/volcano pool we have. 🙂 So the title of todays post has multiple meanings. One of them have to do with the rug rat you see above.  The pool that was previously mentioned has a dragon on it. You have to go through his legs to go down the little slide. Roman for some reason is terrified of it. He has never let us blow it up, let alone get near it. For the last year he asks “what is dragon doing” when we go in the garage, which is quiet a bit.  So weird because he loves the movie How to Train Your Dragon but he’s not having any of this one! But…today he actually let us blow up the pool and the majority of the dragon (not the head). He even went through the legs, as long as we were standing right there :). Growing up so fast, but still so little. I love it!!!

Another preset that I’m in love with! On to the remaining milestones.  One and a half were reached today! First…I got a promotion! Freakin soooooo excited! I have the best boss ever, and am so thankful to have had him! Its great when the big guy takes care of his employee’s! I officially feel like I’m a big kid at Journeyman Level! Thank you!!!

The half…I picked up my diploma for my Associates of Business Administration! I finished back in December, but just now got the diploma :). Trying to decide if I’ll “walk”. I wont for my B.S. because it’s all the way in Alabama, so…. Yeah, not sure yet. I’ll figure it out.  What an amazing Monday! I plan on carrying on the momentum for the rest of the week :)).

Is it Nothing or is it Something?

A photo of nothing…ahhh but it is. I got the chance to sit down with Jake for a couple of hours today and learn a lot about everything photo related. I learned so much I wouldn’t even know where to begin. LR3 is starting to become clearer, I know how to properly import and export my photo’s. I understand metering better, I know shortcuts….and the list goes on and on! I needed some photo’s on my card in RAW to practice while I was there, and this is a little of what I took and how they came out after I learned a little about tweaking them. So excited!!!!!!! Its limitless what you can do with the right tools!

Monkey #2

What a day. I am beat. So is he…

I worked as usual, and hard. My boss will be happy to read that :D.  After Sal got home I ran to Jake’s office to pick up a flash to use for a special little girls 1st birthday.  He’s also selling it. So if I can figure it out… :).  He showed me a ton about all things photography and you can hear the excitement in his voice as he was explaining it to me.  We talked about Lightroom and Photoshop, sRGB vs Adobe RGB, custom white balance, flash’s, resizing, storing, etc. Learned a ton in about an hour. Best class I’ve ever had. Pretty impressive for not really being a class. I’m pretty sure he does it because he loves it. Ahhh…if we could all be so lucky. I also finished homework. Yuck. But it’s all good.

Ahhh time to watch some t.v. and relax. Here is the before picture taken with the flash :).

Ahhhh…..such soft light in a completely dark room.

Flats

I’m sick of wind! I work a lot outside, and when you come inside and your hair is crazy looking, it’s not a good thing. Cleaning out your ears with more than two Q-tips. No bueno.  It’s not a good look!!! Anyways, I decided we would plant some more “flats” as they are called in the gardening world (who knew?). Gotta keep the munchkin busy when its crap outside.

Gotta love dirt indoors…yeah, not really, but luckily I have mostly tile floors. I’m sure everyone is sick and tired of hearing about this garden so on another note that is completely off the subject…does anyone ever see their “views” skyrocket in an hour or two? Mine did today but I’m not sure if it’s a “bug” or something. I’m thinking it was, because it wasnt just by a few it was like 70 hits in two hours. Not normal for my little ole’ blog.

Afterwards we read about animals. What you see here is the crocodile! Ahhhh….scary! I’ve been reading a lot about B&W lately.  I see the term “flat” used a lot, but I’m not sure what it means. What makes a good B&W photo? Emotion, shadows, etc. etc.??? Help would be appreciated!

I know there is a lot of debate about textures and if they improve or ruin a photo. I would have to be on the side of artistic expression, therefore improvement, for lack of a better word. For those who have been with me on my journey so far, you know I love to use textures. Here’s the thing though. I don’t do them necessarily to make a photo better, but to play. It keeps me inspired to see different looks for the same image.  I think about what photo’s I would like to try to take and what texture I would like to apply to it. Mostly though, I do it to learn how to work the archaic PSE I have.  I find out new things every time I try to apply textures. I just learned today that you can apply textures to 3 different layers. Not sure why you would do that, but I’m sure there’s a reason. I also learned how to make a layer by itself in PSE today….I think. Its fun! So I do it!

As a side note about watermarks, I have found some amazing tutorials on watermarks, and always appreciate it when people are willing to teach (I think I say that a lot, but it’s true), however, until today I never fully understood that when you put a watermark on a texture or layer it doesn’t work. Maybe its just me, but I have to put it on my duplicate of the original. Maybe it’s because I have a really old version of Elements or maybe I missed something? Either way…learning by leaps and bounds.

Isabella’s Birthday

We celebrated this pretty little girls birthday on Saturday. Her name is Isabella, but everyone calls her Isa. She’s Sal’s Goddaughter, and she is the sweetest cutest little girl ever! She, and her parents live in Carlsbad, CA so we don’t get to see them nearly as much as we would like. Though, it does give us a good reason to go to the beach! The whole time we are driving there, I hate it, but once we are there and see the family and explore the San Diego area, it’s completely worth it.

I can’t quiet figure out how to get the color cast out completely and I don’t shoot in RAW so I cant do it manually. Maybe I should upgrade to Photoshop or Lightroom and figure it out huh? Any suggestions or favorites for what program to get?

We brought a pinata that Sal got for his birthday that we never broke into. The kids had a blast breaking it open.

The newest addition to the Ramirez family is above. Her name is Juliana and she is the cutest sweetest thing I have ever seen. Okay, they are all cute! Love them to bits!

Weed Jungle

So I stayed home from work today because Roman’s nanny was sick. It was a little cold but it was nice outside. So we went outside and played. On one side of the house we have a weed jungle! Its huge!!!

Roman played with his first ladybug of the season!

Romans first bumblebee!

Bowling = Excitement

We took Roman bowling for the first time tonight, complete with ramp and bumpers. We had a ton of fun, and I’m pretty sure he beat us.

The suspense it killing us…

Some fun with Photoshop. You can see his ball down at the end. Wish I would have had a deeper depth of field, but it still turned out okay.

It’s weird how the little things, like taking Roman bowling for the first time, is what constitutes excitement for me now days. I used to live for the next big excitement, like a big party or the last-minute road trip or driving too fast, etc. Now instead of a few and far between big exciting things happening, I live through Romans excitement. I love that he can be so excited to play with a remote to the PS3 for hours or bubbles. I think maybe its our turn as parents to live through them for a while. Our children appreciate it and our bodies appreciate it. Dont get me wrong. I miss doing something that gets my adrenaline going and there’s nothing wrong with doing something for yourself but I think my perception of what excitement is has changed. I’ll go on a cruise or go to another country now instead of driving down the street at 120 mph.

Maybe its a little bit too soon to be playing these games, but I love the reflection.
